In 2022, while Sri Lanka was going through a spiraling economic crisis, people took to the
streets to protest which soon culminated in a massive antigovernment protest movement called
the Aragalaya Movement. Among the protestors who were from all walks of life was the
prominent visual artist Sujith Rathnayake. In a makeshift studio at the main protest site in Galle
Face Green he used art as his medium of protest, painting and inviting others to join him. On
May 9 th when armed groups of government loyalists attacked and looted the protest site, the art
studio was among the first to be set on fire. However, Sujith and his supporters soon
reestablished the studio. Sujith later held an exhibition titled Arbudhaya saha Aragalaya (Crisis
& Struggle), showcasing his art in a counterattack to the injustices Sri Lankan citizens have
faced at the hands of rulers while also heeding the people’s role in electing said rulers.
