HEMA SHIRONI

Hema Shironi’s art practice is deeply rooted in the observance of the history of colonisation, civil war, displacement, and migration, which she highlights through personal stories and lived experiences. Hema Shironi is a multidisciplinary artist based in Colombo. She holds a BFA from the Ramanathan Fine Arts Academy, University of Jaffna (2014), and an MFA from Beaconhouse National University, Lahore (2019).

Her practice spans embroidery, mythological imagery, bricolage, and installation, focusing on cultural identity and themes of colonisation, displacement, and migration, often drawing from personal stories and her Sri Lankan upbringing.

Shironi’s work has been featured in notable exhibitions, including Critical Zones at ZKM, Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe (2022), Colomboscope (2019, 2022), 13th Taipei Biennial: Small World at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2021) and the 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2024)
